My dissertation traces the legacy of German Romanticism in contemporary literature, film, media, and performance art. It emphasizes German Romanticism's resonance in German-European cinema and literature since 1945 as well as in current North American ecological aesthetics by focusing on three pivotal works across three chapters: Novalis's 1800-2 novel Heinrich von Ofterdingen (Henry of Ofterdingen), Wim Wenders's 1991 film Until the End of the World, and Matthew Barney's 2019 film and multi-media installation Redoubt, as shown at Yale University Art Gallery. The dissertation intervenes in the debate about German Romanticism's anticipation of twentieth-century literary and critical theory, alongside the significant discussions within film and media studies concerning the end of cinema in twenty-first-century digital environments. Furthermore, it contributes to the emerging Anthropocene and environmental humanities fields from a German literature and film and media studies perspective. In my dissertation, I argue that Romantic aesthetics endures in contemporary contexts and offer a novel contribution to scholarship through transdisciplinary conceptual interpretations and the inclusion of underexplored contemporary works across diverse media and artforms. My dissertation posits three key arguments: First, it argues that the legacy of Romantic poetry is a vital form of aesthetic critique and an allegory of seeing in the present, challenging the perception of German Romanticism as a merely irrational, sentimental period. Second, my dissertation asserts that cinema, or the twentieth-century cinematic experience, persists as a form of (post-)Romantic aesthetics in today's post-cinematic media landscape. In doing so, I draw on the historical-genealogical argument that the early nineteenth-century Romantic novel's poetics of optical media can be seen as pre-cinematic. Third, my dissertation claims that the Romantic poetry and philosophy of nature hold renewed relevance to global ecological aesthetics and politics in the context of climate change and Anthropocene thinking.
