The current study seeks to answer the following question: How did Abraham Lincoln's extensive reading of the plays of William Shakespeare influence his personal and political leadership? To understand the leadership of Lincoln, one must understand the impact that the histories and tragedies of Shakespeare had upon him as a politician, president, family man, and leader. While much is written about Lincoln's leadership and his fondness for the theater, a research gap exists in understanding how Shakespeare's plays shaped his leadership. Therefore, the current study will demonstrate how the plays of William Shakespeare influenced the personal and political leadership of Abraham Lincoln. Specifically, the current study will analyze connections between Shakespeare's plays and Lincoln's handling of his personal ambition, his decision-making skills, his rising to meet leadership challenges, and his communicating to friends, followers, and foes. The plays referenced are Macbeth, Hamlet, Richard III, and Henry V, and topics include ambition, decision-making, rising to meet challenges, and the use of effective rhetoric in leadership. The connection between the assassination of Lincoln and the play Julius Caesar is also briefly explored.
