My thesis explores issues of filmic representation pertaining specifically to the topic of developing female adolescent sexuality. In my thesis, I closely analyze and discuss the formal elements of a wide range of films in which young female sexuality is the most explicitly and directly depicted, all of which together span from the early 1960s to the late 2010s. I also examine and discuss the broader cultural context of each separate decade in which each of the respective films was released, closely following the shifting arc of various social movements and cultural progressions, and discussing how this may have affected and influenced each respective film. Starting in the year 1961, I first analyze the film Splendor in the Grass (Elia Kazan), followed by Pretty Baby (Louis Malle, 1978), Slums of Beverly Hills (Tamara Jenkins, 1998), The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Desiree Akhavan, 2018), and finally ending in 2019 with the HBO hit TV show Euphoria (Sam Levinson). Through my analysis of these films as well as the wider cultural milieu and discourse that affected each of their places within film history, I explore the ways in which the representation of explicit female adolescent sexuality has changed, grown, and evolved over the years. My thesis shows that the overall representation of this specific topic in American Hollywood films has become more socially progressive, inclusive, and honest, due to both the rise of various social movements over the years as well as the greater prominence of more female, queer, and/or otherwise marginalized directors in more recent years.
