This document extends the research on the repertoire of concert music by black Americans, particularly in regard to musical compositions written for wind instruments. There has been a steady growth of academic research into the different spheres of music created by black musicians who specialize in what is associated with the American "cultivated" music tradition. Many of these compositions make substantial use of wind and other instruments in idioms that are part of this tradition. The composers in this document are noteworthy in that they composed works for unaccompanied flute. Each composer represents aspects of the cultural and historical trends intended to counter negative perceptions of black culture. They are also representative of stylistic approaches that may include references to the historical precedent of using recognizable elements of black music within their compositional language. Composers selected are included in the Aaron Home Woodwind by Black Composers Catalogue: James Furman, Deux mouvements pour flute seule; D. Antoinette Handy, Five Impressions for Flute Solo ; Adolphus Cunningham Hailstork, Pied Piper Of Harlem for Solo Flute; Ulysses Kay, Prelude for Unaccompanied Flute ; Hale Smith, Three Brevities for Solo Flute. This document provides biographical information, compositional style analysis, historical contextual information, and a comparative discussion on the group of composers selected.
