A qualitative research methodology with heuristic features employed a process of self-immersion, self-search, and reflection into the researcher's experiences as a gay man living in Wyoming. In-depth, conversational interviews with eight additional gay men living in Wyoming followed the self-exploration process. Focus was placed on the "here and now." The descriptions and examples provide a rich composite image of day-to-day experiences, while reflecting an outlook on life shaped by being raised, and living in, a rural environment. Coming out and personal safety are both lifetime and daily concerns for these men. They talk about family, friends, careers, being in the closet, socializing, the gay lifestyle, relationships, gay activism, isolation, acceptance, and harassment. They describe: (1) being happy living in Wyoming; (2) an environment which reflects the epitome of the "don't ask, don't tell" mentality; (3) being on guard; (4) being a good neighbor / worker; (5) pushing the envelope; (6) being busy; (7) developing a small core group of friends; (8) being close to family-both family of origin and current family relationships; (9) taking friends and family into the closet with them; and (10) the informal hard to find gay community. The research data was gathered just prior to the brutal murder in Laramie, Wyoming, of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay friend of the primary researcher. Thus, the essence of the experience of being a white, middle-aged gay man living in Wyoming, prior to the Shepard murder is portrayed. The primary researcher also reflects on the impact this murder had on him personally; on analyzing the research data, and on the people of Wyoming.
