A study of responses social workers would give to clients seeking to change a homosexual orientation to a heterosexual one was conducted with 167 social workers in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ohio. The majority of social workers, 93%, indicated they would not assist the three clients in the vignettes in changing a homosexual orientation to a heterosexual one. A small percentage, 7%, indicated they would assist a client in changing a homosexual orientation to a heterosexual one. Theoretically, social workers were eclectic, but selected psychodynamic theory as their theory of choice. Individual therapy, coupled with cognitive, cognitive-behavioral interventions, support groups and family therapy were represented most among selected interventions.
