A biblical mother, a crossdressing martyr, a reformed harlot, and a tyrannical queen - in this dissertation I discuss four female figures in Old English literature -Eve, Saint Eugenia, Saint Mary of Egypt and the empress Elene-and explore the ways in which they transgress both social and physical boundaries. Rippling out from a discussion of transgression in enclosed spaces (Eve in Eden and Eugenia in the monastery), I next examine Mary of Egypt and Elene, who operate in much less restricted environments. While transgression and sanctity might seem uncomfortable bedfellows, I argue that for these characters, their transgressions are, in fact, necessary experiences that support their exemplarity. For example, Mary of Egypt could not have attained her Christ-like humility without her youth spent in wanton debauchery, while Eugenia's crossdressing was necessary for her to enter a male monastery and learn the values of monastic leadership. This project works across genres, covering texts including the anonymous poems Genesis A and B in my consideration of Eve; Elene by Cynewulf for my discussion of the titular empress; the prose Passion of Saint Eugenia by AElfric of Eynsham; and the anonymous Life of Mary of Egypt. These texts span a period of approximately 150 years and can be situated around the rise of the Benedictine Reform movement, which has significantly influenced my interpretation of the societal norms challenged by each character. My work contributes to the study of women and gender in Early England by bringing together concepts of space and gender as a means of demonstrating how transgression in these texts is not antithetical to sanctity, but rather is required for the saints to be exemplars of redemption. In this argument, I bring together what have previously been discrete analyses on subjects like women's leadership, sexuality, and spatial analysis which have hitherto rarely overlapped. My conclusions in this dissertation indicate that, particularly because the women I examine were already considered holy, their transgressive acts required a perpetual readjustment of the boundaries that were drawn around 'normal' behaviour in order to allow space for these examples of unconventional femininity.
