Sexual and gender identity transformation is an invaluable part of one's development process. While much is known about homosexual identity and gender transition experiences in the general population, little is known about how African American LGBT youth describe their lived coming out and transitioning experiences as LGBT members. Coming out and transitioning experiences can provoke stress, depression, and anxiety. It is also well documented that LGBT youth face stigma and discrimination that adversely affects their mental wellbeing. It is the intent of this qualitative investigation to explore the lived experiences and factors impacting the coming out process and transitioning experiences for African American LGBT youth. This study will add to the existing literature while assisting with the advancement in policy and practice as it relates to social workers and other helping professionals. Using the Developmental Stages of the Coming Out Process and Intersectionality this study will explore a person understanding, acknowledging, and accepting their sexual and gender identity, as well as barriers faced, and coping strategies implemented during their coming out and transitioning experience.
