This qualitative study aimed to explore how universities can incorporate the Zero Trust Security Framework to help prevent cyber-attacks. The research question asked: How have university IT specialists incorporated Zero Trust Security to prevent cyber-attacks? Semi-structured interviews were used to collect information from eight IT security specialists responsible for IT security within a higher education institution or an IT security specialist who has assisted in implementing Zero Trust within a higher education institution. The data analysis process included inductive coding, and ten themes that emerged from the data were (a) castle and moat security model, (b) overlaying security does not work, (c) evaluating risk appetite, (d) Zero Trust is the new best practice for cybersecurity, (e) traditional security frameworks are outdated (f) Zero Trust is strategic, (g) Zero Trust implementation challenging, (h) Mindset: have to have access to everything, (i) Focus on insider threats (j) Zero Trust: Necessity to a prevent catastrophic event. The key findings suggested that higher education institutions experience more successful cyber-attacks due to failing to adopt the Zero Trust Security Framework, and Zero Trust strategically helps organizations prevent the chances of a successful cyber-attack by assisting them to eliminate the concept of trust related to their IT infrastructure and network security.
