Associate Professor, Graduate Institute of Psychology Over time the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has increased in the United States. The availability of educational materials on CAM for mental health providers continues to be limited despite growing public interest in CAM. Based on APA ethics code, mental health providers are expected to be informed regarding medical practices and cultural beliefs associated with CAM. To address this issue, a critical review handbook was created which detailed the history, theory, and empirical support for two major areas of CAM: yoga and acupuncture. The research included within the review specifically includes the use of yoga and acupuncture in treating common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
