The pieces analyzed in this dissertation examine a variety of rhythmic techniques that challenge conventional notions of meter, pulse, and hypermetric grids. By categorizing the methods outlined in the chapters below, this document highlights the rhythmic complexity and ingenuity of artists across a wide spectrum of non-Classical genres. These techniques offer both a visceral listening experience and encourage deeper reflection on how these artists manipulate expectations of meter, pulse, and pattern. There is a plethora of existing literature on the treatment of pitch content (harmony, melody, counterpoint) in Western Classical music, whereas we lack substantial vocabulary and discourse on rhythm. These groove-based ideas that transcend traditional musical boundaries have all developed thanks to influence from historical genres such progressive rock, jazz and folk music. It is exciting to see how 'rhythmic trickeries' can be employed at many levels of complexity and applied across many types of music. Ultimately this research seeks to expose these techniques and provide readers not only with clarity as to how the music is constructed but also a better understanding rhythmic perception. The artists discussed here may use numbers and patterns as generative tools, but their choices in disrupting or supporting these structures are just as significant in shaping the music. I have been passionate about rhythm for a long time, and my own journey as a composer has been influenced by many of these same artists. While much has been written about rhythm in the Western canon, it is my hope that this research contributes meaningfully to the existing and ongoing discourse surrounding rhythm.
