This qualitative descriptive study explored graduates in Texas with both a high school diploma and an associate degree and the reasons and future preparations in early college programs. Ryan and Deci's intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (1985) formed the basis of this study to help researchers understand the motivation in early college. The study focused on two research questions: How do students who graduated from an early college program with both a high school diploma and an associate degree describe the reasons for selecting such a program? and How do students who graduated from an early college program with both a high school diploma and an associate degree feel the program prepared them for their future? The research focused on early college programs using a sample of 27 program graduates over the age of 18 in Texas. The data sources used were online questionnaires and interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis using an inductive approach. Six themes were found that answer the research questions (1) academic benefits for the future and beyond, (2) financial relief, support from others, (3) building personal skills (4) building professional skills, (5) developing a growth mind set, and (6) self-confidence. This study advanced the understanding of early college programs that are struggling with low graduation rates with both diplomas and serves as a guide on how to motivate during a student's first year in early college. Future research may find new ways of discovering aspects in early college that make a positive impact.
