Despite the introduction of most percussion instruments into the orchestra stemming from representational uses, the impact of musical representations on the percussion section has been under researched. To amend this I have created a catalog of musical representations in the percussion section spanning throughout Western music history, including composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benjamin Britten, and Simon Steen-Andersen. Using this catalog and the aesthetic writings on musical representations by Peter Kivy and Brandon Polite as a starting point I then highlighted three ways in which participating in musical representations affected the percussion section throughout its history: the inclusion of instruments originally tied to a cultural imitation, the introduction of purpose-made instruments and found objects, and the increasing importance of percussion in modern musical representations. I also identified four techniques that composers use to achieve musical representations: the use of an instrument's signature sound, extended techniques, found objects, and synthesizing multiple percussive sounds together. This study organizes the scattered knowledge concerning musical representations from within the percussion community into a central point. This allows the impact of representative use on the history of the percussion section to be articulated clearly while providing examples to composers who may wish to create their own representations.
