684,230 juveniles were arrested in 2019 across the U.S. and yet many government officials, advocates, and celebrities are discussing way the justice system can be reformed; few are having conversations on proactive solutions. The benefits of the arts have long been studied, but literature on how the creative arts impacts arrest rates are few and far between. This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to examine the relationship between participation in the creative arts and juvenile arrest rates. A series of logistic regression models were used, controlling for a range of demographic, emotional, and environmental factors. Results show a negative, statistically significant relationship between taking a creative arts course in high school and the likelihood of being arrested. However, this relationship is sensitive to certain factors, as it loses its significance when taking into account sex and a respondent's environment. This suggests that while the creative arts may be used as a proactive tool against involvement in the justice system, it's ultimately part of a larger, more complex system on influences on a child's life.
