Academic disengagement is plaguing school districts across the world and progressively increases as students enter middle and high school. This qualitative case study seeks to understand the role career education and exploration has on middle school academic engagement via middle schoolers' perceptions. Career education was delivered through a curriculum to seven eighth graders in an affluent, well-performing school district. Career lessons were delivered once per week, by the researcher, over a nine-week period. Participants included a wide range of learners, including those on individualized education plans and 504-plans. Piaget's Constructivists Theory served as the theoretical framework. Data collection tools included field notes, classroom observations, one-on-one semi-structured interviews, and member checks. Data analysis efforts produced several codes, ultimately leading to three key themes: positive perceptions of career education, increased awareness of future career opportunities, and enhanced engagement with curriculum. Findings are reported and recommendations for future research are provided. Implications for educators, school districts and state lawmakers include advice regarding career education and learning opportunities at the middle school level.
