Growing up in Korea, K-pop played a significant role in my childhood. Witnessing its evolution into a global sensation, with BTS performing at the Grammys and Blackpink at Coachella, led me to explore the global rise of K-pop from a political and cultural perspective. My thesis investigates three areas. First, I examine K-pop's connection to South Korea's soft power policies, gender and sexuality flexibility, and the rebranding of "K" culture. Second, I analyze music videos from SNSD, TWICE, and NEW JEANS to highlight the evolution of Korean femininity within Plastic Orientalism. Finally, I address the meaning of "K" in K-pop today through a documentary, exploring authenticity and originality in the genre. Central to my project is the concept of "soft power," crucial for South Korea's national strategy, promoting cultural exports to enhance global presence. Generational changes in K-pop reveal shifts in femininity, with groups like NEW JEANS depicting more natural and diverse narratives. My documentary features interviews with fourth-generation idols like XG and LE SSERAFIM, who stress their distinctiveness, questioning the boundaries of K-pop. Through this exploration, I aim to understand the contemporary dynamics and global impact of K-pop.
