There is a greater need to understand how individuals define career success and what motivates them to pursue increased career satisfaction and success. Career success is a joint venture between individuals, leaders, and organizations. The problem addressed in this study was how leader career support can shape follower career satisfaction and success. Leader career support impacts not only followers but also the organization. Followers who achieve greater career satisfaction and success will perform at higher levels for their employers. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of followers receiving leader career support and the resulting impact on their career satisfaction and success. This study employed the use of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and leader-member exchange theory to investigate how leaders can positively influence followers' career success by understanding followers' needs and building connections with followers. The study participants comprised eight members of a small-sized manufacturing organization in New York State. Participants answered an online questionnaire consisting of 12 questions. The research results were analyzed using the five phases of analysis outlined by Castleberry and Nolan: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The study resulted in five themes between the two research questions. The themes were career development, work engagement, leader career support, motivation, and career success. The study results show that leaders and organizations should be concerned with employee's career goals and work together to achieve these goals. Future research could include an expanded study that uses more than one organization and quantitative or mixed-method studies to provide more significant insights into precisely how leaders can shape the career success of their followers.
