Heretic or holy woman? Joan of Arc was judged first as one and then the other by ecclesiastical tribunals of the fifteenth century. The nineteen-year-old Joan was condemned and executed as a relapsed heretic in 1431 at the hands of political enemies. Twenty-five years later, this condemnation verdict was nullified by supporters of Joan in a trial of the inquisition known today as the "Nullification Trial." This trial of 1455-1456 nullified the condemnation and claimed further to remove the social tarnish upon Joan of Arc's memory, her surviving family and associates. This trial memorialized Joan not only as innocent of heresy, but as a holy woman. Its dossier of legal documents included the oral testimonies of surviving eyewitnesses to Joan's life together with the judicial opinions (Latin, consilia) of eight French prelates who reconsidered the case against her. Students of Joan of Arc who considered the Nullification Trial prior to the completion of Pierre Duparc's critical edition in 1988 relied almost exclusively on Chapter Five of the Trial record included by Jules Quicherat in his nineteenth-century edition. That chapter consists of the anecdotal eyewitness testimonies gathered in various French cities by the traveling Nullification tribunal in 1455-56. While these eyewitness testimonies are vital to our understanding of the cultural creation of Joan of Arc, the scholarly treatises of Chapter Eight bear the weight of officially defending her as a holy woman in four identifiable social roles as virgin, mystic, prophet and standard-bearer. The Nullification Trial's portrait of Joan of Arc and her role in French history constitute what one may call a "national hagiography," a medieval harbinger of the modern development of independent European nations.
