The theme of the education of the hero is the focus of this study and it is my intention to demonstrate how two important figures from eighteenth-century France conceived of this theme. They are Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and Francois Boucher. The education of the hero appears here in several ways, and I have selected the following works for study: Le Barbier de Seville, Le Mariage de Figaro and La Mere coupable by Beaumarchais and the following works by Boucher: Earth: Vertumnus and Pomona, Madame de Pompadour, The School of Love and The School of Friendship. Both of these Artists demonstrate my interpretations of the education of the hero, and it is necessary for us to see how they viewed the individual in relation to society to understand how they perceived of what an education is. Both Beaumarchais' and Boucher's work are dualistic, for they are works that have several possible meanings when examined closely. They are important because they provide us with a view of theater and painting in eighteenth-century France. By studying Count Almaviva and some of Boucher's figures, one has a better grasp of the eighteenth-century hero in French theater and art and of how such an understanding might lead us to a better knowledge of ourselves in our own time.
