This dissertation delineates the codes that give form and meaning to historical fiction films. Three issues guide the analysis--the motives behind the film's turn to history, the significance of the film's interpretation within the field of historical knowledge, and the generic motifs of romance and spectacle. A crucial tenet in the thesis is that historical films are about contemporary issues. This principle is vital to the motivation behind each production. As a result the study investigates why films choose to address the present through a representation of the past. The body of historical knowledge and contending historical interpretations serve as sources from which the genre draws material. The study investigates fields of historical interpretation and positions films among the scholarly controversies surrounding their particular episodes. A major theme in historical films is the association of the individual and the state and the relationship between private life and the extra-personal forces shaping history. Characterization and intimate drama ground the fiction in personal acts, but the historical perspective expands their significance into social terms. The tension between private and public life is expressed in the generic motifs of romance and spectacle. Central to the film's interpretation is the representation of the forces producing social change. Two means of representing causal forces are the romantic drama and the spectacle elements, such as the period setting and the handling of mass action. The relationship between the romance and the spectacle expresses the mediation among the individual, nature and society and serves as a vehicle for historical explanation. Though many films are discussed, the proposed method is applied in detail to La Marseillaise (1938, Renoir), Senso (1954, Visconti) and The Rise to Power of Louis XIV (1966, Rossellini). These case studies serve as an exemplary test because different circumstances motivate each film, different fields of historical knowledge serve as the basis for the film's interpretation, and different narrative structures integrate the romance and the spectacle. The studies produce original insights on these celebrated films demonstrating the value of the method and inviting its application to other works in the genre.
