This study analyses private book-ownership patterns in German-language areas of the sixteenth century through 1620 in order to understand better the influence of the vernacular book among various segments of the urban population during the period. Sources utilized include 716 post-mortem property inventories and related documents from several German and Austrian municipal archives, which itemize the possessions and books found in homes of private citizens. An introductory chapter surveys developments in the sixteenth-century publishing industry, focusing upon the newer vernacular book production emanating from German presses in the wake of Protestant religious and educational reforms. New distribution modes for the vernacular book and pamphlet are also studied, and the crucial roles of the Frankfurt and Leipzig bookfairs are mentioned. Catholic response to Protestant success with the vernacular book is likewise discussed. Quantifiable evidence on the number of books in private homes is treated in the second chapter. Regional differences among the number of book owners are noted, with higher ratios of book owners in Protestant urban populations of northern Germany as opposed to lower ratios among Catholic urban dwellers in Austrian Tyrolia. Increased book ownership among the middle classes is revealed by most post-1560 inventories from Protestant areas, underscoring the significance of educational reforms there during the 1530s and 1540s. Household inventories in Catholic areas seldom mention books until the end of the century. Book ownership patterns among churchmen, merchants, urban administrators, students, women, and various occupations within the artisan class are studied in detail for several cities. Representative book inventories among those various groups are analyzed in the final chapter, where attention is given to the categories of literature found in sixteenth-century private libraries. The rise of vernacular literature in those book collections can be traced as the century progressed. Supplementing the entire study are a chronologically arranged appendix of the 716 archival sources and a bibliography.
