Friendship Baptist Church is the oldest independently organized Black Baptist church in the City of Atlanta. Like many churches across America, the church has an ageing and declining membership, occasioned in part by its continued struggle to attract and retain young people to its fold. There are numerous explanations for the missing demographic, especially in traditional churches, and this complex issue has been studied from a variety of perspectives. This study delves into the issue of Friendship's aging and declining membership from the perspective of the mission of the church. Specifically, it explores whether storytelling as a tool for transformation has the power to motivate a select group of ministry leaders to re-envision the church's mission to its neighboring historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The methodology used in this study draws heavily on Walter Fluker's narrative-based (virtue) ethics, a tool that excavates memory for stories that give shape and meaning to an individual's or community's existence. One of Friendship's defining stories is its early support and enduring relationships with three of the HBCUs in the Atlanta University Center.Eight of the church's clergy and lay ministry leaders participated in this ethnographic study, which evaluated their pre- and post-study responses to two main storytelling events. The first event was a church-sponsored forum on Friendship's historic relationships with the HBCUs in Atlanta. The second event was a focus group comprised of current HBCU students. While the full impact of this study will not be realized for some time, the initial results showed that the storytelling events stimulated their imagination of the church's missional engagement with the HBCUs in the Atlanta University Center. The post-study responses showed the church leaders exhibited a greater openness to integrating college students into the life of the church. There was even a suggestion about allowing young adults to shape ministries that cater to their needs. The methodology employed in this study successfully tested the hypothesis that storytelling could help trigger a reimagination of Friendship's mission. Although successful, this project thesis proposed modifications to the methodology that could inspire a more profound prophetic imagination. This study opens the door for Friendship to use this methodology to reimagine other areas of its mission and ministries, especially with the proposed modifications. The methodology employed in this study can also be used by churches that share a similar context to Friendship Baptist Church.
