This study introduces the development of Chinese folk music to provide context for how composers like Chen Yi and Tan Dun were influenced by these traditions. It also examines their growth and learning experiences, which shaped their unique styles and creative approaches. Chen Yi incorporates elements of Jing Yun Da Gu, while Tan Dun blends pipa techniques with flamenco styles.Chinese American composer Chen Yi absorbed numerous elements of Chinese folk music during the Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement. Her experiences, combined with rigorous training and the influence of prominent composers, allowed her to merge Chinese folk traditions with Western classical music, creating works that reflect her cultural identity. Her first solo guitar piece, Shuo Chang, is a clear example of this fusion, drawing directly from the northern Chinese art form Jing Yun Da Gu, whose musical elements are vividly expressed in the composition.Similarly, Tan Dun, another Chinese American composer, has been deeply influenced by Chu culture since his childhood. His education in both Chinese and Western music allowed him to compose Yi2: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, inspired by the I Ching (Book of Changes). In this concerto, he combines traditional Chinese pipa techniques with flamenco influences. Seven Desires, derived from the solo guitar section of the concerto, highlights Tan Dun's ability to integrate Eastern and Western elements in innovative ways.Although many contemporary composers and guitarists are exploring the integration of Chinese elements into guitar music, most works remain basic arrangements rather than serious original compositions. By analyzing the folk elements and compositional techniques of Chen Yi and Tan Dun, this study aims to guide and inspire future composers and guitarists in creating meaningful guitar music with Chinese characteristics.
