Creativity and madness has been a field of special interest. Creative individuals, namely published poets, were associated with depressive symptomatology. Previous research on published poets with a history of mental instability were found to be anecdotal and contrived from biographical data. One of the purposes, though not the primary basis of this study, was to determine whether the association between creativity and mental illness, more specifically, poetry writing and depression, continues to be visible in contemporary American poets. In part, this study was undertaken to empirically and quantitatively explore contemporary published poets and the presence of depression. It was hypothesized that published contemporary poets would show a higher level of depression in comparison to a random sample of the general population. Thirty-three percent of the participants reported a history of at least one psychiatric condition, with depression as the majority of reported mental disorders. The 43 participants showed no significant difference in levels of relatively current depression from the comparison group. It was inferred that writing poetry subsided depressive symptomatology, a formal diagnosis of depression, or both. The usefulness of poetry writing for the participants was explored through a questionnaire constructed specifically for this study. Whether poetry effectively fosters certain positive internal processes, such as insight and exploration of inner conflict, was also explored for the suggestion of increased integration of poetry into psychotherapy in suitable cases.
