Bullying in the workplace is a global phenomenon, and its impacts are significantly consequential. The majority of what we know about this phenomenon is based on research that has focused on victim, bystander, and witness accounts. Adults who have been impacted by bullying in the workplace reported having physical, emotional, psychological and financial distress. Unfortunately, there is limited or no specific information on how adults between the age of 25 and 65 who have been victimized by bullying in the workplace perceive their experience and coping skills. Therefore, this study explored and identify the perspectives and coping skills of adults between the age of 25 and 65 who have been victimized by bullying in the workplace in order to reduce and prevent the harmful risk factors associated with the phenomenon. Based on the rampant nature of the phenomenon, the following was explored: (a) descriptions of bullying as perceived and processed by adult victims, (b) how the adult victims' of bullying perceived their coping methods, and (c) how adult victims' of bullying perceived their emotional responses to being bullied. A qualitative phenomenological research approach was applied to understand the lived experiences of this population. The theoretical framework was based on Judith Herman Trauma Informed Approach. Ten individuals from various racial, professional and ethnic background participated in the study and a telephone interviews were conducted with each participant. Based on the results of interviews and thematic analysis, the majority of participants reported that job-related demands, such as isolation, discrimination, verbal abuse, sexual inuendos, reduced work hours, domination, forceful threats and intimidation were the main forms of bullying experienced. The coping process adopted by 50% of the participants was fear, anxiety and depression during the bullying incident. Silent retaliation or retaliarory confrontation was the coping methods used by 30% of the participants. While 80% of the participants reported healthy coping skills such as prayer, listening to music and positive self-affirmations as their emotional response to the phenomenon to name a few. The findings of this study is for Clinicians and professionals alike, including the area of Organizational psychology the need to focus our efforts on (1) finding increasingly effective coping skills for victims who have been traumatized by workplace bullying; on (2) finding effective training systems to put into place in the national workplace; and on (3) finding effective legislative solutions in global politics to prevent bullying for all.
