Impulsivity may be broadly defined as a tendency to act without forethought. For instance, a preference to select a smaller immediate reward over a larger delayed reward (i.e. propensityto discount delayed rewards) is considered a reliable marker ofimpulsive behavior. Extreme impulsive behavior is implicated in several psychiatric disorders including attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Indeed, while for most people the value of a future reward is reduced as the delayforobtainingthe reward increases, the rate at which individuals discount future rewards varies, with high delay discounting rates demonstrated in populations associated with extreme impulsive behavior including ADHD. Methylphenidate (MPH) (distributed under the brand name 'Ritalin') is the treatment of choice in ADHD. It is a psychostimulant drug that inhibits dopamine (DA) (and noradrenaline) reuptake thus significantly increasing DA extracellular levels in the brain. Considering the well-established role of DA signaling in mediating reward function, including decision making in the context of delayed rewards, it has been suggested that MPH might be effective in ADHD due to its ability to reduce impulsive behavior by effecting DA signaling. Very little evidence to date exists to support such scenario. In order to address this critical point, we conducted a within-subject double-blind placebo-controlled study in which forty-three healthy adults completed a delay discounting (DD) task twice, once after placebo and once after a single dose of MPH (20 mg) administration. Participants completed the task at both time points while undergoing a functional MRI (fMRI) scan in order to also investigate the neural impact of MPH (outside the scope of the current study). Based on previous findings we hypothesized that MPH will decrease the propensity to discount delayed monetary reward among healthy adults (i.e. reduced impulsivity), yet that the magnitude of this effect will differ among individuals. Results indicated that, as expected, at the group level participants made less impulsive choices following MPH compared to placebo administration. The direction and magnitude of this effect differed across participants. Participants with higher scores in trait impulsivity scale tended to behave more impulsively regardless of drug manipulation. Taken together our findings suggest that acute MPH administration may reduce impulsive behavior among healthy adults, yet that the impact of such manipulation may vary across individuals.
