The homeless population in the United States has been historically underserved, making them one of the most vulnerable groups of Americans living in poverty. Homeless people have a high rate of mental illnesses, substance abuse, and previous incarceration, which can impact their ability to maintain permanent housing. One of the most under-researched problems is the intersectionality of homelessness and mental illness among homeless African American males. This study explores this issue by collecting the perceptions of those who work with this population regarding the resources provided to them. The following three research questions guided this qualitative study: What are the current mental health services provided to the homeless population? Are African American males who are mentally ill receiving these services? What are barriers to African American males receiving these services? The findings indicate that there is a lack of services provided to African American homeless males. In addition, participants shared their perceptions of barriers this population encounters when seeking treatment.
