The artistic traditions and innovations demonstrated in the Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells exemplify the development of the Columban manuscript style from the seventh to ninth centuries. This art remained stylistically connected to the stone and metalwork which provided its artistic foundation, but as a new artistic media, it also demonstrated innovation, such as eloquently integrating text and image. There is much doubt and debate about the origins of Durrow and Kells, indicating that the environment in which they were created was complex. Primary sources pertaining to the artwork in manuscripts and stone and metalwork and secondary sources discussing the historical and artistic contexts support the proposed theories of stylistic connection, evolution, and influences. Results will be presented in chapters on (1) Historical and Aesthetic Contexts, including principles in Columban manuscript art, (2) Book of Durrow, (3) Book of Kells, (4) Stylistic Changes, and (5) Conclusions.
