The purpose of the present study was to investigate strategies of quality high school coaches of female athletic teams to build impactful coach-athlete relationships and how they learned these strategies. Six head coaches of girls' varsity sports at the interscholastic level participated in the present study. An exploratory qualitative research design was used through one focus group session and five follow-up individual interviews. All six coaches participated in the focus group and five completed follow-up individual interviews. The focus group and all individual interviews were conducted via Zoom and transcribed verbatim. Using the transcriptions, a thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo. Seven overarching themes of creating impactful coach-athlete relationships and how the participants learned these strategies were identified: athlete centered, commitment, communication, considerations, defining success, learning strategies, and team culture. Each overarching theme also contained at least one theme (e.g., commitment: peer to peer, coach and athlete). The findings support the coaches' primary methods of creating impactful coach-athlete relationships as remaining athlete centered through the use of the 4Cs (Cote & Gilbert, 2009). The findings also support the primary method of learning for coaches is by learning from other coaches (Nash et al., 2008) and remaining introspective as supported by the Quality Coach Framework (United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, 2020). This study focused on coaches of female athletes to help close the gap between research and practice. Interscholastic female athletes experience sport drop-out at much higher rates than their male peers (Harrist & Witt, 2015; Sabo & Veliz, 2008) and one of the main reasons for drop-out is the lack of positive sport experience (Women's Sports Foundation, n.d.). The findings revealed that when coaches remain athlete-centered, constantly learn and reflect on their relationship building skills, and prioritize creating impactful coach-athlete relationships that their student-athletes are more likely to remain committed to their sport and their coach. Future research should focus on incorporating the perspectives of female student athletes into the coach-athlete relationship dynamic. This could involve observing coaches during the data collection process, exploring potential differences between individual and team sports, and examining the role of entire coaching staffs.
