Adherence to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans has been proven to improve health outcomes and reduce risk of many preventable diseases. Despite the benefits of meeting these requirements, only 24.2% of U.S. adults currently meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. A common strategy for individuals to meet these guidelines is to join an exercise program; however, many individuals begin an exercise program but have difficulty adhering to them. It is estimated that 40-65% of individuals drop out of an exercise program within six months. Additionally, individuals who had little involvement in an exercise program prior to joining a fitness center are more likely to drop out of an exercise program than those with prior exercise experience. Current research has not focused on individuals who have successfully transitioned from physical inactivity to long term adherence. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence exercise adherence in this population by using a mixed methods design. Survey participants were highly motivated to exercise by positive health, ill health avoidance, and strength and reported a high degree of community belongingness. Interviews revealed themes of community, knowledge, push, and positive health outcomes. Based on perspectives of the participants in this study, it is recommended that fitness centers ("gyms") build community, push their clients, and educate them about exercise technique, programming, and positive health outcomes.
