A two-year study was established in Streeter, ND to evaluate the impacts to soil health, crop production, and livestock performance within by integrating cattle within winter rye cover crops. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.) was fall seeded following millet (Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv) harvest in 2022 and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) harvest in 2023 and grazed in fall and spring (DG) or spring only (SG) with no graze (NG) and no winter rye (NR) controls also established. Fall grazing was deferred in 2023 due to low winter rye biomass. Cover cropping and livestock integration increased ground cover and reduced weed establishment but did not alter soil chemical properties. Soil bulk density was greater in SG compared to NR, but did not reach levels detrimental to root development. Winter rye provided a forage source early in the grazing season, which reduced cattle production costs compared to dry lot feeding.
