This dissertation investigates the connection between spirituality and media consumption among fans during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Rooted in social identity theory, the research examines this connection through the lens of sports fandom and media usage. In a close-ended quantitative study, 782 United States citizens were surveyed on measures of spirituality (using the Intrinsic Spirituality Scale), sports fandom (through the Sports Spectator Identification Scale), national identity (via the Olympic nationalism index), and Olympic media consumption patterns. Results showed that various forms of Olympic media consumption (split into broadcast, social media, and online non-social media) increased as respondents reported higher levels of spirituality. In addition, all three forms of Olympic media consumption increased as respondents reported higher levels of sport fandom, patriotism, nationalism, smugness, and internationalism. This dissertation advances understanding of Olympic media engagement, sports fandom, national identity, and spirituality, offering new applicability of a previously established scale to use for the fusion of future sports media and spirituality research projects. It provides practical implications for sports media executives, organizations, and producers to enhance fan media consumption and deepen connections with audiences of the Olympiad and other sports megaevents.
