Most child maltreatment research focuses on the parent-child relationship, but research shows that violence against elite athletes by coaches is prevalent and has adverse effects. This study used a quantitative methodology with descriptive statistical methods to examine the correlative relationship between the level of violence in the coach-elite athlete relationship and how athletes perceive coaching efficacy and the quality of the coach-athlete relationship. 128 retired elite athlete participants filled out the Violence Against Athletes Questionnaire (VTAQ), Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q), and Coaching Efficacy Scale (CES). 3 main research questions were analyzed: (1) When elite athletes report psychological, physical, and/or sexual violence in the coach-athlete relationship, do they perceive their coach's coaching to be less efficacious? (2) When elite athletes experience psychological, physical, and/or sexual violence in the coach-athlete relationship, do they perceive the coach-athlete relationship to be of lower quality? (3) Does the athlete's perceived quality of the coach-athlete relationship increase with the athlete's perceived efficacy of the coach's coaching style? Results showed a negative correlation between scores on the VTAQ and CES and the VTAQ and CART-Q, and a positive correlation between scores on the CES and CART-Q. As future research substantiates these findings, enhanced safeguards can be instituted for the protection of young athletes. Moreover, the implications of this study extend to clinicians, as it furnishes empirical validation suggesting that in instances where elite athletes disclose substandard coach relationships or perceive ineffective coaching, a thorough evaluation of potential violence within the coach-athlete dynamic may be warranted. Lastly, this investigation underscores the imperative for the establishment of Forensic Sport Psychology as a formally recognized interdisciplinary domain, which strategically employs the tenets of sport psychology within forensic frameworks.
