This dissertation undertakes a media historical analysis of Hallyu - the globalized popularity, circulation, consumption, and production of South Korean popular culture - that recasts Hallyu media through their diasporic characteristics, connotations, and characters. Starting with three Hallyu media/historical flashpoints, this work explored the interplay of historical temporalities and transnationality in the emergence of a globalized mass media watershed and the production of a specific kind of Koreanness as a national identity. I draw from literatures on race, ethnicity, nationality, and media studies to offer gyopo-gam as an anchoring concept. Gyopo-gam describes both the feeling and the semblance of diasporic Koreanness, particularly through its capture and re-capture by dualities of model minority and perpetual foreignness. Hallyu media forms and objects, I argue, frequently leverage elements of gyopo-gam like global mobility and cultural hybridities to produce profits, but rarely attend to the experiences, contexts, and minoritizations of gyopo on the peninsula or across the Pacific. I call Hallyu media "gyopomedia" to describe the ways that such media are designed to travel, to move, and to hybridize.
