The music of John Williams has often been the topic of conversation in film journals and books; he is, perhaps the western world's most influential living film composer. However, even with all of this research and discussion, there is a glaring oversight: women. This thesis catalogues and examines Williams's musical treatment for the heroines of Star Wars, and how it has changed over the forty-year span of the Skywalker Saga. Williams's scoring for each of the main heroines-Leia, Padme, Rose, and Rey-follows their character arcs closely, even spanning the entirety of the saga in Leia's case. By examining his musical treatment of each of the heroines through the lenses of heroism and romance, we can see how Williams's style has developed during his work on Star Wars. Although his characteristic symphonic style of scoring never wavered during the course of the saga, his approach to each of the characters changed. When Williams scores for Leia, for example, he initially accompanied her with a love theme, as her primary role was as a love interest and occasionally a damsel in distress (although she often participated actively in her rescues). In the Sequel Trilogy her role shifted to a military leader and Williams adapted her iconic melody into more heroic contexts, reserving "Han and Leia's Theme" for romantic moments. Throughout the course of the Skywalker Saga Williams's scoring for the heroines of Star Wars developed and changed to reflect the time in which each trilogy premiered.
