This document is divided into two parts. The first part of the paper discusses two sets of twentieth-century piano pieces by Claude Debussy: Estampes (1903) and Images I (1901−1905). The second part focuses on how three female Korean composers used traditional Korean folk songs as the basis for several solo piano pieces: "Curious Cuckoo" (2016), "Popping Chestnuts" (2016), "A Sweet Breeze" (2020), "Balloon flower Waltz in Wonderland" (2019), "What are you doing, Mr. Fox?" (2020) by Heeyoung Yang, Folksong Revisited (2005) by Jean Ahn, and Three Studies of Korean Folk Tunes (2010), and "The Phantom of Arirang" (2020) by Misook Kim. Two artistic movements − impressionism and symbolism − were very popular when Debussy composed Estampes and Images I during his middle period. Although Debussy rejected the use of the term impressionism to describe his music, there are several impressionistic elements in his music. Debussy preferred that his works be associated with symbolism, and he was inspired by several symbolist poets. Both movements contributed to the rich imagery present in both sets of piano compositions. In Estampes, Debussy creates a musical journey that spans nearly half the world. It begins in East Asia, moves to Spain, and then returns to his home country, France. Images I has more abstract aspects in terms of design and inspiration. The first part of this document discusses the harmonic language and the wealth of imagery found in these two works by Debussy. The second part of the paper highlights piano arrangements by three active contemporary female Korean composers. This part shows how Yang, Ahn, and Kim established their own distinctive compositional features through their use of Korean folk music. This document also describes traditional Korean music genres.
