This study is a collaborative, interpretive study with three teachers into the ways that empathy lives in a classroom of seventy-five Grade One and Two children. Empathy is seen as an essence of our being that allows us to learn about one another to respect one another, to be together in relation with one another. The intent was to conduct a mutual inquiry into the ontological aspects of empathy from a pedagogical perspective through dialogue, observation, and interactive journalling. From the literature review, four conceptualizations of empathy were created: identification, communication, a caring act, and a moral act. These provided an initial framework from which to begin conversations with the teachers. As a result, respect as a fifth conceptualization was added and all five were seen to be interconnected. As the conceptualizations became increasingly constrictive, we began to explore how socialization processes can both lead us away from and back towards natural child-like expressions of empathy. Using Stein's (1989) notion of differing depths of feelings and Hodgkinson's (1991) schema of value-related terms, we explored the idea that empathy, as an essence of being, might be covered over by social layers of personality, culture, values, and motivation. At times, these layers may be fairly thin and transparent, allowing for easy access to our being. However, at other times, during crisis or growth or as a result of continued negative experiences, these social layers could become so thick and impermeable as to make access to our inner selves difficult, if not totally impossible. This study provides a beginning understanding of how empathy might live in classrooms at different depths for different purposes and with different functions. The question for this study not only determined the method but the topic of the question also affected how the method came to play out in a relationship of respect, trust, and mutuality among the teachers and researcher. Our inquiry has suggested that empathy is critically important to teaching and learning relationships; therefore, it is essential that further inquiry be conducted both in different classroom contexts and within pre-service teaching programs.
