The purpose of this dissertation is to explore, rediscover, shed light, and renew awareness of the quality of creative and journal writing relating to poetry and healing. The project embraces an arts-based approach to trauma, seeking a nonlinear paradigm for healing, and provides numerous examples of creativity. The dissertation consists of two parts: a poetry anthology and a narrative essay. The personal narrative is "Forever Unbroken, a Memoir." It appears that both the anthology and narrative essay is based on the narrative model, a method by Kathy Charmaz. The anthology is intended for general readers, trauma sufferers, therapists, and others in the healing profession along with students and instructors of ethical and creative leadership. The effectiveness of poetry therapy was assessed and refined through an arts-based research process. Utilizing a formal qualitative inquiry using poetry as an artistic process in order to understand and articulate my trauma. While also considering individuals who suffer from trauma related to sexual abuse, depression, domestic violence, and child abuse. The knowledge attained through a narrative study involving my journey with pain and how writing poetry was the turning point to my healing, re-discovered and affirmed existing features of the use of poetry in therapeutic settings. Section I discusses poetry therapy in a transformational understanding and details a description of leadership from within from a non-traditional approach along with the desired research results. My manuscript includes overviews of historical fields, theoretical concepts, methods, the practice of poetry therapy, and successful outcomes in poetry therapy, as well as a personal narrative chapter titled "forever unbroken" that outlines my journey through pain and the healing which manifested from within my writing. Furthermore, I include another chapter of poems which showcase my pain, healing and strength giving birth to the leader inside me. Section II includes a poetry therapy bibliography and a bibliography of recommended books.
