This qualitative descriptive study explored how high school counselors in U.S. school districts provided prevention and intervention techniques and empowered adolescent resilience to support students in grades 9-12 coping with developmental adversities such as life stressors. Grounded in social cognitive and self-efficacy theories, the study addressed three research questions: (1) counselors' processes for providing prevention techniques, (2) their use of intervention strategies, and (3) their ability to empower students to build resilience. Eighteen high school counselors participated through 15 individual interviews and one focus group. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis and organized with MAXQDA software. Twelve themes emerged. For prevention, counselors emphasized open dialogue (Theme 1), early identification (Theme 2), barriers to delivery (Theme 3), and institutional support (Theme 4). Intervention-related themes mirrored those of prevention and included open dialogue and tailored strategies (Theme 5), identifying students in need (Theme 6), delivery challenges (Theme 7), and district or school support (Theme 8). Empowerment-related themes focused on reframing weaknesses as strengths (Theme 9), building relationships through communication (Theme 10), using students' interests and skills (Theme 11), and fostering mindset development (Theme 12). These findings provide actionable insights for school counselors, educators, and mental health professionals, highlighting how relational, skill-based, and contextual strategies can strengthen adolescents' capacity to cope with developmental stressors and build resilience.
