In this dissertation, I investigate the relationships between the intrinsic properties of marine sediment, sedimentation rate, geomorphology, and seismicity to understand how earthquake shaking is influencing enhanced undrained shear strength on active margin marine sediments. Although earthquakes can trigger submarine landslides, active margins have fewer submarine landslides than passive margins despite having higher levels of seismicity. Recent work has demonstrated elevated shear strength in the uppermost 100 meters below the seafloor (m) on seismically active margins. These observations have given rise to the seismic strengthening hypothesis that repeated exposure to earthquake shaking progressively dewaters and densifies sediment, which leads to increased shear strength and slope stability. However, the relative contribution of seismic strengthening versus intrinsic properties on shear strength remains largely unknown. Chapter 1 introduces the developments of seismic strengthening and this historical context for the work that follows in Chapters 2-4. In Chapter 2, I perform laboratory analysis on three active and three passive margin sediments and compare their laboratory strengths to their in-situ field strengths. In Chapter 3, I focus on the undrained shear strength of the shallow marine sediments in the southern end of the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ), where there is variable seismicity, sedimentation rates, and geomorphic environments. I finish, with Chapter 3, by performing an X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis on southern Cascadia sediments and compare them with previously collected XRD data from northern Cascadia. Overall, the analyses show that the enhanced undrained shear strength on active margins is not reproducible in resedimentation and one-dimensional uniaxial strain experiments, which simulates the natural burial process but without seismic shaking. Furthermore, the enhanced undrained shear strength observed in southern Cascadia is significantly influenced by sedimentation rate and geomorphology, and the mineralogy of northern and southern Cascadia has differences that can potentially influence the physical properties of the sediment.
