This dissertation explores faculty perceptions and pedagogical approaches of generative AI (GenAI) within the first-year writing classroom. Through a qualitative grounded theory approach, this study investigates how faculty engage with, understand, and adopt GenAI in their teaching of first-year writing. Drawing on interviews with faculty across diverse institutions of higher education, findings indicate that they are largely in the early stages of GenAI adoption. Cautious attitudes, ethical uncertainty, and inconsistent levels of AI literacy underpin the faculty's perception of GenAI. These findings reveal that while faculty recognize there is a place for GenAI in the writing classroom, a pedagogical framework has not emerged due to the need for professional development, AI literacy, and curated guidance. In response, this study introduces the Practitioner-Informed AI Pedagogy (PIAP) Model, a conceptual framework that supports faculty-led integration of GenAI. The PIAP Model outlines three iterative phases: exploration, reflection, and application. This model offers a practitioner-based approach for instructors to develop their AI literacy while cultivating informed pedagogical approaches to integrating GenAI into writing instruction.
