Purpose: There is limited research on counseling students' attitudes toward working with older adults with serious mental illnesses (OASMI). With the rapid growth of the aging population, along with recent legislative changes in mental health law, it is likely that counselors will encounter more of these individuals in their practice in the coming years (Fullen, 2018; Fullen et al., 2022). This makes it crucial to understand the factors influencing counseling students' decisions to work with OASMI upon graduation. This study aimed to use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework to identify predictors of counseling students' intentions to work with OASMI.Method: This cross-sectional study involved 112 students from CACREP-accredited master's or doctoral counseling programs. It utilized established and modified measures within the TPB framework to identify predictors of intention to work with OASMI.Results: A hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that attitudes toward OAs, attitudes toward people with SMI, and frequency of contact with them significantly predicted counseling students' intentions to work with OASMI, explaining 21% of the variance. Conclusions: Counseling students with more positive attitudes about OAs and people with SMI, and more frequent interactions with OAs have greater intentions to work with OASMI. This highlights the need for counselor educators to enhance curricula and clinical experiences to foster positive attitudes, increase opportunities for exposure to the population, to ultimately influence greater intentions to work with this growing population.
