Students engage in problem solving while solving mathematical tasks for which the solution methods are not known in advance. As students make sense of the mathematical ideas embedded in these tasks, and attempt to find pathways to the solutions, they develop mathematical practices, and learn mathematical concepts. This method of problem solving instruction is referred to by many names. The current study uses the same phrase that Schroeder and Lester (1989) used, "teaching mathematics through problem solving" - TMTPS. Most recent studies (e.g. Jackson et al., 2013; Sullivan et al., 2014) show that the mathematical tasks and how teachers launch them determine the success of their students' problem solving experiences. The same body of research also points out how difficult it is to support students' productive struggle while maintaining the cognitive demand of the tasks. The current research interviewed practitioners of TMTPS and visit their classrooms to collect evidence of how they launch mathematical tasks. The current research answers the following questions: a) How do elementary teachers launch cognitively demanding tasks? b) What scaffolds do teachers use to engage all learners? Data collected for this qualitative study included video recordings of classroom instruction and pre-post interviews with teacher participants. The five launches show how teachers supported their students' understanding of the task features and the mathematical ideas in the task. Four of the five launches kept the cognitive demand of the task. The findings call attention to a student-centered approach to teaching mathematics through problem solving.
