In the post-AI age, the open-source ecosystem, long celebrated for its collaborative spirit and accessibility, is facing unprecedented challenges. This thesis investigates how the rising popularity of Generative AI (GenAI) applications alters the dynamics of open-source communities, with a focus on new media artists as both users and contributors in these communities. Through primary research, secondary research, and a game prototype designed using open source resources, this thesis explores the shifting relationship between the open source ecosystem, new media artists, and GenAI applications. Primary and secondary research reveals how GenAI discourages open source contributions and breaks the value exchange balance within communities, leading to sustainability concerns for the open source ecosystem. Yet, open source communities continue to offer unique values, such as accessible tools, communal learning environments, and networking. To communicate these complex dynamics, this thesis presents Bazaar.log, a browser-based speculative narrative game. Designed as a research prototype and critical design intervention, the game immerses players in the history of open source, from its early days of hacker culture to its entanglement with corporate interests and AI ethics. The game also explores browser-native aesthetics and interaction models, showcasing the creative potential of open source web technologies. This thesis not only raises awareness of an evolving ecosystem but also calls for renewed collective imagination in shaping a just and resilient open-source future in the post-AI context.
