As result of anthropogenic activities, soil contamination by heavy metals particularly lead (Pb) has raised concerns globally due to the exposure risks. High concentration of Pb in soils negatively affect soil microbial communities, plant growth, crop yield, water sources, and human health. This study aimed at evaluating a low cost, low tech, and environmentally friendly remediation method to reduce phytoavailable Pb concentration through the application of biochar and compost amendments. A pot experiment was conducted on highly Pb contaminated soils collected from a residential backyard in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Contaminated soil was treated with two soils to amendment ratios: 1 gallon of soil to ¼ and ½ gallons of amendments. The treatments used were biochar, chicken manure compost, vegetation compost, biochar & chicken manure compost, and biochar & vegetation compost. Phytoavailable and total Pb concentrations were measured as well as soil pH, conductivity, and organic matter content. Soil microbial communities' DNA was extracted and sequenced using 16S V3/V4 and ITS specifically for bacterial and fungal communities sequencing to determine microbial community composition. Treatments were applied to the contaminated soil and incubated at room temperature for two months, at which time sparkler radishes were planted to assess the effect of the treatments on plant growth and uptake of Pb.The results indicated that chicken manure compost and biochar combined with chicken manure compost effectively reduced phytoavailable Pb concentration. The two effective treatments had better plant growth results; however, due to lack of sufficient radish harvest, we were unable to assess plant uptake and translocation factor. Microbial communities' composition revealed that bacterial communities' diversity increased and fungal community diversity decreased with decreasing phytoavailable Pb concentration. In conclusion, for a short-term period, chicken manure compost and the combination of biochar and chicken manure compost were effective amendments to reduce phytoavailable Pb concentration in contaminated urban soils.
