A large area of the southwestern United States is dedicated to beef cattle production, where environmental limitations, such as low and highly variable rainfall, low forage yield and decreasing forage quality have been observed. Raramuri Criollo (RC) cattle, a native breed indigenous to northwestern Mexico, have been of interest because they exhibit specific behavioral characteristics such as increased exploratory behavior, increased grazing areas due to docile behavior, and resource allocation to better suit the environment, making them ideal for harsh and diverse conditions. A major challenge for these systems is how to balance nutrient availability with the requirements of the animal, especially during the transition of grasses from vegetative to reproductive growth. Protein and energy content and degradation of most digestible fraction decline with the advance of plant tissue maturity (Spiegal et al., 2020; Roacho Estrada et al., 2023; Large, 1954). Generally, protein supplements are utilized to meet nutritional requirements and aid the function of the rumen, whereas the addition of energy supplements can be advantageous when cattle are grazing low-quality forage. Biodiesel production generates a byproduct called crude glycerin (CG), which has been considered a potential source of energy supplementation for cattle. The major component, glycerol, is rapidly fermented in the rumen to propionate, an essential glucogenic precursor for the rumen. Modest rates of inclusion feed could improve energy balance without negatively impacting forage intake or digestibility (Carvalho et al., 2011). Supplementation effects on behavior, as well as variations in forage intake, are complex and dependent upon multiple factors, including forage morphology, climatic and environmental controls, and social interactions within the herd (Ward et al., 2019).To evaluate the success of supplementation interventions, it is important to know how cattle allocate their time grazing, resting and moving. Modern precision livestock technology using LoRaWAN communication technology offers new opportunities for real-time observation of these activities. LoRaWAN tracking collars featuring built-in accelerometers allow close observation of behavior over large areas and thus improve the comprehension of daily activity distribution and spatial use in grazing fields. On the other hand, animal monitoring combined with virtual fencing technology, such as the solar-powered Nofence collars (https://www.nofence.no/), enables using virtual enclosures for controlled grazing without the installation of physical fence infrastructure. In virtual fencing, the conditioning of animals is conducted using sounds and electrical pulse stimulation; and their efficacy may even be affected by social learning mechanisms occurring in the herd. The integration of nutritional management and behavioral monitoring technologies cold offer new opportunities for the development of efficient, sustainable, and adaptable beef production systems operating on arid and semiarid rangelands worldwide.
