Since the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004, the inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities in general education classrooms has become increasingly common. However, this shift has sparked debate among educators and parents regarding the effectiveness of inclusion placements for students who require significant instructional support. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the perceptions of teachers, administrators, and parents regarding the impact of inclusion on high school students with intellectual disabilities across two Midwestern school districts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven participants. Findings highlighted benefits such as peer interaction, increased confidence, and social engagement, but also raised concerns about the academic learning gap, grading inconsistencies, lack of individualized support, and inadequate post-secondary preparation. Participants emphasized the need for clearly defined inclusion goals, more professional development for educators, high expectations, and meaningful, individualized inclusion experiences. The study concludes with recommendations for improving inclusive practices to better support the academic, social, and transitional success of students with intellectual disabilities.
