This dissertation explored the role of teachers in addressing student mental health needs in primary schools, focusing on the areas of mental health literacy, training, and the barriers they face. The researcher assessed teachers' awareness of common mental health disorders, identified effective pedagogical strategies, and proposed improvements for teacher training and professional development programs. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys administered to teachers and administrators at CP Elementary School (CPE) in Northwest Louisiana. Findings revealed that, while teachers possessed a basic understanding of mental health issues, there was a significant need for more comprehensive training. Teachers reported moderate confidence in identifying and differentiating mental health issues but highlighted a lack of adequate training and resources. Effective strategies identified in this study included trauma-informed teaching and creating supportive classroom environments, though their consistent application was hindered by insufficient formal training. The researcher underscored the importance of integrating mental health education into teacher training programs and fostering collaboration between educators, mental health professionals, and school administrators. Recommendations included ongoing, specialized mental health training, clear referral protocols, and sufficient resources to support both students and teachers. By addressing these gaps, schools could create more inclusive and supportive environments that enhance the well-being and academic success of students with mental health challenges. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of these interventions and explore the role of technology in providing mental health support in educational settings.
