Root-knot nematodes (RKN; Meloidogyne spp.) are the most extensively studied and economically important group of plant-parasitic nematodes worldwide. The Southern root-knot nematode (SRKN; M. incognita) is a pest in Capsicum pepper production in most of the production areas, including those in California. To establish the effect of a California population of SRKN on a nematode-susceptible bell pepper cultivar, plants were exposed to increasing levels of inoculum. Plants were highly sensitive to the nematode and even at low nematode levels, plant growth was significantly reduced. Nematodes are traditionally controlled by broad-spectrum toxic fumigant nematicides, but recently non-fumigant and more benign nematicides are available. One of them, with the active ingredient fluensulfone was applied as a foliar spray to transplants of different vegetable crops. If effective, this approach would greatly reduce the amount of product applied compared to recommended field soil applications. A foliar spray resulted in severe phytotoxic effects on some of the vegetable crops, but tomato and pepper were less sensitive. Rinsing the leaves of tomato or bell pepper soon after a spray application did diminish phytotoxic effects, while maintaining the nematicidal activity. In both crops, fluensulfone was transported from the leaves into the roots, and then exuded from the roots as shown by its highly nematicidal effect on nematodes in water containing the growing roots. Growing nematode resistant cultivars is another nematode management strategy. In greenhouse trials, resistant pepper cultivars proved highly effective to prevent the reproduction of SKRN. As only few resistant cultivars are available, and these might not be suitable for California growing conditions, grafting susceptible pepper onto nematode resistant rootstocks was also evaluated both in greenhouse and field trials. In both, resistant rootstocks were highly effective as plant growth and fruit yields were similar to non-grafted controls, remained free of nematode symptoms, and prevented nematode reproduction. Although all resistant pepper cultivars were effective against SRKN, they were not all effective against a recently detected species of RKN in California M. floridensis. This species was virulent on pepper cultivars with N-gene-based resistance, whereas cultivars with Me-gene-based resistance were resistant against both M. floridensis and M. incognita.
