This study explored how secondary school counselors experience and practice LGBTQ+ allywork within the sociopolitical climate of the post-2020 U.S. education system. Guided by Sara Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology (2006), it examined K-12 school structures that influence allywork and support for LGBTQ+ students. Through two semi-structured, queer phenomenological interviews with eight diverse secondary school counselors from public and private schools across Indiana, Ohio, Oregon, and Louisiana, the research uncovered the multifaceted nature of allywork amid growing anti-queer legislation and sociopolitical resistance. Findings revealed that allywork is a vital, inherent aspect of school counseling, offering lifesaving support to LGBTQ+ youth. Counselors engaged in allywork by creating safe spaces, establishing Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) clubs, consulting with stakeholders, promoting cultural competency education, and advocating for systemic change, all while facing institutional resistance and hostile climates. These insights underscore the urgent need to build LGBTQ+- oriented spaces, educate administrators and stakeholders, and overcome institutional barriers. Contributing to the growing body of LGBTQ+ allyship research in education, this study offers actionable strategies to strengthen allywork, amplifies its positive impact, and highlights the importance of expanding queer phenomenology in qualitative research, suggesting future studies explore other marginalized communities affected by sociopolitical pressures. Together, these conclusions broaden understanding and support for marginalized identities in educational settings, enhancing allywork and inclusivity across K-12 schools.
